Colistin & Spectinomycin Oral Antibacterial Solution


Composition

Each ml contains:
Colistin sulfate ........................................ 200,000 IU
Spectinomycin
(as dihydrochloride pentahydrate) ........ 50 mg
Excipients ..................................................... q.s. to 1 ml

Indications

COLISPEC-NOR® Oral Solution is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by colistin- and spectinomycin-sensitive microorganisms, including:

  • Colibacillosis (E. coli)

  • Salmonellosis

  • Enteritis and bacterial diarrhea

  • Chronic respiratory disease (CRD)

  • Pasteurellosis

  • Mixed Gram-negative infections


Target Species

  • Poultry (broilers, breeders)

  • Calves

  • Lambs & kids


Mechanism of Action

  • Colistin disrupts the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, causing rapid bacterial death.

  • Spectinomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.

The combination provides synergistic, fast-acting antibacterial activity, particularly in enteric and respiratory infections.


Dosage & Administration

For oral administration via drinking water or direct oral dosing.

Poultry

  • 1 ml per 1–2 liters of drinking water
    for 3–5 consecutive days

Calves, Sheep & Goats

  • 1 ml per 10–15 kg body weight
    Once daily for 3–5 days

📌 Ensure medicated water is the only source of drinking water during treatment.
📌 Shake well before use.


Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to colistin or spectinomycin

  • Do not use in animals with severe renal impairment

  • Avoid prolonged continuous use


Side Effects

  • Generally well tolerated

  • Rare digestive disturbances

  • Overdose may increase risk of nephrotoxicity (colistin-related)


Withdrawal Period

(Indicative – subject to local regulations)

  • Meat:
    Poultry & ruminants: 3–7 days

  • Eggs:
    According to local regulatory approval


Special Warnings

  • Use only when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected

  • Avoid misuse to reduce antimicrobial resistance

  • Observe antimicrobial stewardship principles
